THE RISE AND RISE OF DENIM

JEANS, JACKETS, SHIRTS, SHORTS – THERE ISN’T AN ITEM OF CLOTHING IN OUR WARDROBE THAT HASN’T BEEN GIVEN THE DENIM TREATMENT.

Denim was first invented in the 1800s as a practical and durable workwear option and by 1934 (when the first pair of women’s jeans emerged), we all wanted a piece of the denim action! Fast forward to today and denim’s versatility means we’re still very much in love with the material. From designer to street style, you’d be hard pushed to find a person that didn’t own a piece of denim clothing. Whether you’re wooed by punk-inspired drainpipe jeans or prefer the loose mom jeans made popular in the 80s, there’s a denim trend for men and women to dip in and out of for every occasion.

The best thing about denim is that it suits everyone, is genderless and completely timeless. When have you looked at a pair of jeans and thought they aren’t on trend anymore? The cuts and lengths might vary but the premise stays the same. Add some denim to your wardrobe and the possibilities are endless. Dress up your denim style with accessories, a pair of heels or a crisp white shirt (nothing beats the classic Levi’s inspired white and denim combo) or dress it down with trainers, sliders and a hoodie that sits neatly in the leisurewear trend.

Denim’s rich heritage is something to think about when you’re choosing the right denim for you. In the 50s it was all about the dark wash denim while the 60s saw stonewash denim appear. Denim dresses and denim shorts started to fill the shelves and by the 70s you could be top to toe in denim. Flared jeans, denim jackets, wrap dresses and long denim skirts that doubled up as festival-friendly denim became all the rage.

Let’s pause a moment here to acknowledge that none of the above have disappeared. If anything the denim that lined wardrobes back then are still being seen on the street in 2018. Acid wash and mom jeans hit the fashion headlines in the 80s and the past decade has seen baggy shirts, dungarees and oversized denim jackets complete the cyclical trend.

Fitted/unfitted, cropped/full length, jumpsuit/separates, double denim/colored denim – the list of options goes on. Find your denim style and own it. Mix and match depending on your mood, the weather and the sense of occasion. A pair of pink denim shorts is a fabulous summer addition while a black denim jacket is the perfect transeasonal coat to take you between autumn and winter, especially if you’ve gone for a sherpa-lined denim option.

While the high street caters for all of your denim needs, be sure to scour vintage shops too where you’re more likely to find customized denim pieces that are adorned with denim patches to create a unique and one-off item. Priceless if you’re a denim aficionado. One thing we know for sure is that you can never overdo the denim.
