THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE WEARING IN YOUR HAIR RIGHT NOW

WHETHER YOU INVEST IN A READYMADE HAIR ACCESSORY OR FASHION YOUR OWN FROM MATERIALS AND PROPS, AS LONG AS YOUR HAIR IS ADORNED WITH SOMETHING, YOU’RE WINNING.

Hair accessories used to be something that was limited to weddings, special occasions and functional form (like when you need to get your hair out of your face at a gym session). However the past few seasons have seen a shift in their popularity and diversity – on and off the catwalk. Unusual materials, clever placements and hair accessory layering have opened the door for some super cool looks that have been catching our attention everywhere. Ready to embrace the adornments? Here’s how…

CLAW CLIPS
Also known as crocodile clips and banana clips, these plastic wide tooth hair accessories were all over the catwalks. A 90s throwback, they’re the fastest way to go from hair down to hair up. Plus, the size of them mean they’re superb at scooping up different layers and keeping them secure and tucked in.
Keep the sides loose and messy or make like the designer tribe and slick down the sides for a polished finish. START with THERMASHAPE Quick Blow-Dry Spray, STYLE with TAMEFRIZZ Smoothing Lotion to iron out any waves then FINISH with TAMEFRIZZ De-frizz Oil to ensure your style stays fluff and flyaway free.

LEATHER HEADBANDS

How do you make a headband sexy? Make sure it’s leather and thick. Place it round the hairline to blend seamlessly from your face and then it’s your call whether you scoop hair into high pony or topknot or let your hair billow around the band for an 80s vibe.

Don’t fancy leather? Velvet works just as well and if you don’t have a band, a wide ribbon or piece of material will do.

ZIG ZAG HAIR COMBS

Another 90s throwback, those stretchy hairbands you used to keep every inch of hair out of your face (a must when you’re growing your fringe out), they’re having a comeback. For a more sophisticated vibe, tie your hair in a loose bun at the back – nothing too structured, you’re not going to ballet class.

START with MOISTREPAIR Anti-Breakage Spray to prevent those comb teeth snagging; STYLE hair with ADDVOLUME Root and Body lift and finish with a light misting of HAIRSTAY Working Hairspray.

By keeping things more relaxed it will provide a contrast to the more structured effect the band creates at the front.

SCRUNCHIES

If you want a hair accessory that’s making it big in streetstyle, consider the humble Scrunchie. Now a full-blown accessory, forget grey marl jersey, go for animal print, polka dot, or leather. Super easy to do a DIY version if you have a piece of material you adore, sew it around a hair elastic making sure there’s enough room to ruche it up and voila, homemade Scrunchie.

EMBELLISHED BARETTES

Monogrammed, crystal or bow-shaped, clips and barrettes are the real statement piece of the hair accessory world. Don’t stick to one on the side or at the back of your head, place them jauntily above your temples, line up two or three over a deep side part or clip an oversized alphabet letter on top of your bun.
The hair accessory that works on every length of hair and every texture, for extra grip and to guarantee your clip stays put (some of them are weighty!), STYLE hair using HAIRPLAY sea salt spray. The backcombing effect it gives will act as extra padding.

MINIMALIST GRIPS

The complete opposite to the above, if you don’t like bling or want a more simplistic style that won’t get double takes at work, choose a plain silver or gold grip and slide them into hair just above your ear. Or you could hunt out pearl-studded slides or diamante-embellished versions for a little something extra.
And don’t restrict yourself to one slide. Two or three placed parallel above one another is the way to work it this season. You could even glue buttons or badges onto a plain Kirby grip for a bespoke style that’s unique to yours truly.
