Copenhagen is famed for its functional, minimalist style. The Danish capital runs on creativity and is packed with timeless design, fashion and architecture, along with cool concept stores, world-famous restaurants and up-and-coming artists. If it's chic inspiration you're after, this is the place to find it.
"I get a lot of inspiration from Copenhagen street style," says stylist and make-up artist Pernille Huus, who co-owns MIPEcph, a hair salon in the heart of the city. "It's a free society – you can be yourself. It doesn’t matter if you're a hipster, a natural beauty or have blue hair; you will be accepted."
Denmark’s creative mecca is all about expression, which inspires the way Pernille styles hair every single day. “It’s about creating new looks, being a beauty consultant and making people happy from the inside out. I know it sounds cliché, but helping them feel confident is an extremely important part of being a stylist.”
Helping to build her clients’ self-esteem isn’t the only reason why this salon owner is so passionate about hair. She reveals: “I’m a bit of a color geek. I think we should all express our personalities using different hair colors, while staying true to ourselves. That’s what I love about KMS STYLECOLOR – you can be playful and create different looks depending on your personality and mood.”
So, which Scandi hair trends are ruling the Copenhagen streets right now? Messy buns and bangs, says stylist Pernille, but her go-to KMS style equation is all about texture and height.
“A lot of Scandi girls have fine hair so I often recommend a volumizing Style Equation,” she explains. START with ADDVOLUME Shampoo or MOISTREPAIR if the hair is damaged, STYLE with ADDVOLUME Liquid Dust – an innovative product which won a Danish Beauty Award in 2018, and FINISH with HAIRPLAY Playable Texture to create weightless styling with a pliable finish.
For the inside track on Copenhagen style, Pernille reveals her three favorite areas in the city for inspiration. She says meatpacking district Vesterbro has a “unique, urban vibe with lots of good restaurants and stylish places to go for a drink”, must-see area Christianshavn is “really beautiful” thanks to its atmosphere and canals, and Nørrebro is “cozy and cool”.
Her final words of advice on the hipster hotspot? “Don’t go to the obvious places in Copenhagen. Take the small side streets and you’ll find the hidden gems.”
